Studying in Canada as a minor

Find out what to do if you or your minor child is coming to study in Canada as a foreign national.

Who is a minor child?

In Canada, each province and territory decide the age when an individual can be considered as an adult. This is known as the age of majority. A person under the age of majority is considered a “minor child”.

Ensuring the welfare of your minor child in Canada

When submitting Canadian study permit application for a minor child, the parents or legal guardians of the minor child must provide proof that the minor child will have the care and support they need during their stay in Canada. Therefore, minor children under the age of 17 must either:

  1. come with their parent or legal guardian or
  2. have a custodian in Canada

A custodian is a responsible adult, who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, who will take care of and support the minor child throughout their stay and transition in Canada until the reach the age of majority. A custodian is required for minors under 17 years of age but optional for minors 17 years of age and older. A visa officer can still request proof of custodian for minors 17 years and older on a case by case basis.
